Biotechnology and environmental studies are fundamental topics that can provide important advancements, and as such they are given dedicated research lines at CSGI. Besides the structural and functional characterization of molecules derivatives and drugs useful in biological processes, some central biotech studies involve transport mechanisms across membranes, the physico-chemical properties of pharmaceutical systems, and the synthesis of nanomaterials for drug delivery. Environmental studies have focused on the development of sensing-based algorithms for biomass retrieval, low-cost and low-toxicity catalysts to degrade pollutants, life cycle analysis of environmental footprint, monitoring the effects of microplastics pollution on marine environments, and the design of stimuli-responsive coatings for monitoring human health and environmental parameters.
