Design and development of formulations using micro- and nanocarriers such as liposomes and vesicles, micelles, supramolecular complexes with cyclodextrins, micro- and nanoparticles.
Studies of pharmaceutical and technological aspects of herbal drugs, herbal drug preparations and herbal medicinal products. Improvement of their biopharmaceutical properties by the use of conventional and innovative formulations.

Prof. Dr. Anna Rita Bilia is full professor at the University of Florence and since 2006 she is Director of the Post-graduate School of Hospital Pharmacy. She is a Pharmacist graduated with full marks (cum laude) in 1988. She has got a PhD in Chemical Sciences (full marks, 1992), and two post-graduate degrees (cum laude) “Science and Technology of Medicinal Plants” (1994) and “Hospital Pharmacy” (1997). In 1995 she got the national award "Claudio Redaelli" for outstanding young researchers in the field of phytochemistry and in 2002 she got the international "Egon Stahl Medal" for researcher younger than 40 years, working in natural products. In 2018 she was awarded of the Qihuang International Prize of China Association of Chinese Medicine. She is leading the group of pharmaceutical technology and chemistry of natural products at the Department of Chemistry. She is responsible of several national and international projects including two European Projects. Since 2018 she is the president of Technical Scientific Committee of the Interdepartmental Center of Biotechnologies of Agrarian, Chemical and Industrial Interest (CIBIACI) of the University of Florence. She is expert of the European Pharmacopoeia of the TCM group since 2009. Member of the board of directors (2006-13), vice-president (2014-15 and 2020-2021) and president (two mandates, 2016-2017 and 2018-2019) of the international scientific society of Medicinal Plants and Natural Product Research (GA). Member of the board of directors (1997-2012 and 2022-2023), president (two mandates, 2013-2015 and 2016-2019) and former president (2020-2022) of the of Italian Society of Phytochemistry and Sciences of Plants for Medicinal, Food and Cosmetic use (SIF). Since 1997 she is the Italian delegate of the board of directors and of the scientific committee and vice chair of the European Scientific Cooperation on Phytotherapy (ESCOP). She is responsible of the Sino-Italian Joint Laboratory on Traditional Chinese Medicine. She has been the supervisor of more than 120 experimental theses of students in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology, supervisor of more than 50 theses of students in Hospital Pharmacy and supervisors of seven PhD theses. Prof. Bilia’s list of publications shows more than 260 papers in international journals, she is authors of several invited book monographs and chapters. She is member of many Editorials board and Editors of international journals.
1996 "Claudio Redaelli" award from SIF (Italian Society of Phytochemistry) for outstanding young researchers in the field of phytochemistry
2002 “Egon Stahl” Prize from GA (Gesellschaft für Arzneipflanzenforschung, Society for medicinal Plant Research) for the most outstanding young researcher (younger than 40 years old, “Silver Medal”) in the field of pharmaceutical biology and analysis of medicinal plants.
